Planting spring bulbs brings summer blooms to your garden and landscape.  Choose from a large variety of Wisconsin favorites that include begonias, caladium, calla lilies, canna lilies, dahlias, gladiolus and more!

PLANTING

The best time to plant spring bulbs is when soil temperatures reach at least 60 degrees and the threat of frost has passed.  Spring bulbs can also be started indoors around mid-March and then moved outdoors.

Prepare the planting area by digging and loosening the soil at least 8 inches deep.  Add fresh compost or peat where needed.

Follow the recommended planting depth found on the label.  Set the bulbs in the hole, pointy side up.  If you can’t figure which side is up, plant the bulb sideways.  The flower will still grow rightside up.  Back fill soil, lightly compress, and water thoroughly.

FERTILIZING

Feed bulbs with a slow-release bulb fertilizer.

TIPS

• Plant bulbs in groups instead of rows for bursts of color in your landscape.

• Calla lilies, canna lilies and caladiums are great for containers.

• Save bulbs for next year by digging them up before frost.  Cut off excess foliage and wipe off loose soil.  Let air dry for 1-2 days.  Pack bulbs in dry medium such as perlite, vermiculite, sawdust or peat moss.  Store in garage or basement where temperatures are between 40 and 55 degrees.
